We The People: Handbill Text
It's our country and we want it back! "We the people" insist on public financing of congressional and presidential elections
The evidence is clear, the record $2.2 billion "purchase" of the 1996 election was marked by the lowest voter turnout since 1924! Nearly 2/3rds of the eligible voters no longer bother to vote.
What was once a bad joke that we have the best government that money can buy is now a grim reality.
In a recent New York Times CBS News Poll on campaign financing a whopping 89% of the voters wanted either fndamental changes or a total rebuilding of the system. Clean Money Campaign Reform would cost the average taxpayer less than $10 per year!
Isn't our democracy worth that much?
We will not be silent while our country is sold to the highest bidder. We demand public financing of federal elections and free campaign time on all public media. We urge support of "Clean Money Campaign Reform" (HR.2199 and 5.918).
You can participate in this peaceful, non-partisan demand for democracy in Washington. DC, April 7-14, 1999. When we the people will petition our government for redress of grievances by passing out this handbill to Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court.
